Bernard Devergès came from a military family. He was a draftsman for the Navy, attached to the head engineer Le Blond de La Tour. He became a reformed captain, then an engineer in 1735, and was made head engineer in 1751. He is known for buildling the first fortifications for New Orleans (1760) and for a number of military constructions.
